Liquid expanders


  An integral part of gas processing, separation and liquefaction process in the hydrocarbon industry is the expansion of high-pressure fluids in the liquid state. Historically a Joule-Thomson valve creates this expansion. . In the last decade liquid expanders (also known as dense fluid expanders), installed in parallel to JT valves, have also been used for this duty, improving overall plant efficiency. This is valid for industrial gas as well as hydrocarbon and LNG liquefaction plants.

Cryostar has developed a full range of dense fluid expanders suitable for the process industries for different applications, e.g. for expansion of cryogenic liquids, liquefied gases and other flammable liquids. Cryostar proposes a design close to the gas expander based on a radial inflow turbine. It can be loaded with an oil brake but more usually with a generator.

Radial inflow liquid expanders for LNG service or Mixed Refrigerant service
With the cryogenic liquid turbine, the total plant savings are between 1.5 per cent and 5 percent depending on plant size and the process design while considering the additional production of liquid, the power saving and the production of electricity. The liquid expander can be included in the original process or be part of the retrofit installation of a plant.

Compare to the reverse pumps, the advantages of Cryostar Liquid Expander are many. All cannot be detailed here. It includes advantages in term of performance, of electrical installation, range of operation and last but not least in term of expansion ratio. A single stage machine will fundamentally give better overall efficiency than a multi-stage machine simply because of the shorter flow path through the machine.
